Laird Campbell works from his studio in the Cowichan Valley on the east coast of Vancouver Island, building abstract compositions from reclaimed and found wood. His practice is rooted in a sustained engagement with materials — with the way aged wood holds time, with the geometry that emerges when fragments are placed in relation to one another, with the tension between accident and intention that runs through every piece he makes.
The title plays on two meanings at once: the aftermath of something — what remains when an event has passed — and the mathematics of it, the counting and reckoning that follows. 'After Math I' is a work about consequence and calculation, about the way we try to make sense of what has happened by arranging its pieces. The square format gives the composition a kind of completeness, a sense that the accounting is done, the tally made. It is a work that rewards sitting with, that reveals more the longer you look.
This original work is a Wood Assemblage: a hand-built composition of reclaimed wood pieces, each selected for its grain, age, and surface quality. It is the first in a two-part series — 'After Math I' and 'After Math II' — which may be collected separately or together.
