Laird Campbell works from his studio in the Cowichan Valley on the east coast of Vancouver Island, building abstract compositions from reclaimed and found wood. His practice is rooted in a sustained engagement with materials — with the way aged wood holds time, with the geometry that emerges when fragments are placed in relation to one another, with the tension between accident and intention that runs through every piece he makes.
Where 'After Math I' opens the inquiry, 'After Math II' deepens it — a second reckoning, a further working-through of the same questions. The two works were made as a series and are best understood in dialogue with each other: two approaches to the same aftermath, two ways of counting what remains. The slightly different dimensions of this second piece give it its own character, its own particular weight and balance. Collected together, the pair forms a complete statement; collected separately, each carries the full force of the series on its own.
This original work is a Wood Assemblage: a hand-built composition of reclaimed wood pieces, each selected for its grain, age, and surface quality. It is the second in a two-part series — 'After Math I' and 'After Math II' — which may be collected separately or together.
