Laird Campbell works from his studio in the Cowichan Valley on the east coast of Vancouver Island, building abstract compositions from reclaimed and found wood. His practice is rooted in a sustained engagement with materials — with the way aged wood holds time, with the geometry that emerges when fragments are placed in relation to one another, with the tension between accident and intention that runs through every piece he makes.

A bridge is a structure of connection — a way of getting from one place to another across a gap that would otherwise be uncrossable. 'Bridge' holds that quality in miniature: a small, concentrated composition that feels like a crossing, like something spanning. The close-up photography reveals the extraordinary grain and texture of the wood, the way each piece carries its own history while contributing to a shared structure. The reverse is also displayed, making the work legible from both sides — a bridge, after all, can be crossed in either direction.

This original work is a Wood Assemblage: a hand-built composition of reclaimed wood pieces. Close-up photography reveals the extraordinary grain and texture of the wood; the reverse is also displayed as part of the work.
