Original Wood Assemblage - 'Chronos'

Laird Campbell works from his studio in the Cowichan Valley on the east coast of Vancouver Island, building abstract compositions from reclaimed and found wood. His practice is one of sustained attention — to the material, to the process, to the slow accumulation of meaning that happens when you work with your hands over time. He is drawn to aged wood for what it carries: the marks of use, the memory of other lives, the way time writes itself into grain and surface.

Chronos is the Greek god of time — not the dramatic, mythological Kronos, but the quieter, more philosophical figure: time as the medium through which all things pass and are changed. 'Chronos' holds that quality. The vertical format of the work suggests a column, a measure, something that marks duration. The antique wood frame — itself a piece of time — becomes part of the work’s meaning, a container that is also a subject. This is a piece about what endures, and what doesn’t.

This original work is a Wood Assemblage: a hand-built composition of reclaimed wood pieces, set within a 1-inch mat and an antique wood frame. Close-up photography reveals the extraordinary grain and texture of the wood; the reverse of the framed artwork is also displayed.
