Laird Campbell works from his studio in the Cowichan Valley on the east coast of Vancouver Island, building abstract compositions from reclaimed and found wood — piece by piece, intuitively, the way a conversation finds its shape. His practice is rooted in a belief that materials carry meaning: that aged wood holds time, that the grain of a plank can speak if you know how to listen. He aspires to work with wood as freely as a pencil, scribbling and doodling until something worth keeping emerges.
There is something quietly powerful about a work called 'She' — a title that refuses to explain itself, that simply points and lets the viewer complete the thought. The composition holds that same quality: present, self-possessed, not asking for anything. The wood pieces fit together with a kind of inevitability, as though they were always meant to be here, in this arrangement, in this frame. It is a work that rewards time spent with it.
This original work is a Wood Assemblage: a hand-built composition of reclaimed wood pieces, set in a thin wood frame with the reverse of the artwork also displayed — an invitation to see the work from all sides, to understand the making as part of the meaning.
