Laird Campbell is a Vancouver Island -based artist who builds abstract compositions from reclaimed and found wood, working intuitively from his studio in the Cowichan Valley. His practice is rooted in a deep engagement with materials — with the way aged wood holds time, with the geometry that emerges when fragments are placed in relation to one another, with the tension between accident and intention that runs through every piece he makes.
The title nods to the restless energy of transit — of things in motion, of journeys taken and not quite completed. But 'Trainspotting' is also a quiet work: small in scale, dense in presence, the kind of piece that rewards close looking. The wood pieces fit together with a compressed intensity, as though the whole composition is holding its breath. There is something cinematic about it — a single frame from a longer story, caught mid-movement.
This original work is a Wood Assemblage: a hand-built composition of reclaimed wood pieces. Close-up photography reveals the extraordinary grain and texture of the wood; the reverse is also displayed as part of the work.
